One of the Best Surgeons...

In September 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The diagnostics (mammogram and ultra-sound) were done at the local (world-renowned!) academic hospital, and I turned to Raphael Medical for a second opinion. The specialist whom they referred us to strongly suggested that I have an MRI. But doctors at the hospital here refused, stating that they did not doubt their diagnosis, and that an MRI was therefore not necessary.  I had the MRI done anyway on my own, and a second tumor was found in my breast which had been missed earlier! It now became clear that I needed a mastectomy instead of the lumpectomy which had been planned.

Raphael Medical also arranged for a review of the radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy which followed. The specialist concurred with the local radiation protocol and hormone regimen, but preferred a different, more aggressive type of chemotherapy. As I have no medical background, I preferred that Raphael Medical staff discuss the various options directly with my local oncologist. There were numerous e-mails between them (with copies to me), and the oncologist agreed to the chemotherapy recommended through the second opinion.

This experience taught me the critical importance of patient empowerment. With the help of Raphael Medical I was able to obtain the best medical care, from one of the best surgeons, and I am eternally grateful.
